FAQ - Windows XP/Vista [32 bit] Max Ram
Have you purchased 4GB of ram but it's only reading as 3-3.5? No worries, we've got your answers!
Although your model's max is stated as 4GB, you will only be able to 'read&rsquo 3.0-3.5GB of RAM. The reason is because you are running a 32-bit Operating System, such as Windows XP or Vista 32, which has an actual limitation of 4GB, but since things like sound cards and video cards have dedicated RAM, the amount of ram those have subtracts from the 4GB that you've installed. To avoid this you would need to upgrade to a 64 bit system, such as Vista 64.
Still confused? An example: you've installed 4GB of memory, but it's only being read as 3.2GB. You have installed a 512mb graphics and an upgraded sound card that has 256mb of dedicated ram.
512mb + 256mb = 768mb
4GB &ndash 768mb = 3.2GB
